Sharpening Leadership Skills to Improve Child Outcomes in Baltimore, Maryland

In September of 2010, FMC was fortunate enough to meet Baltimore City Department of Social Services (BCDSS) Director Molly McGrath. What immediately resonated were her leadership skills and tenacity in caring for youth in need. It comes as no surprise that McGrath has helped build a successful system in Baltimore, developing leaders and implementing a mentality that all children should have a family and a say in their future.

Video – Casey Family Services’ Parent Child Foster Care Program

Casey Family Services in Baltimore City works with pregnant and parenting teens who are in the foster care system. They lend support through helping them find foster homes, and appoint social workers to oversee the teens’ and families’ progress. FMC got a behind the scenes look at the program through the eyes of foster youth Tellita Crawford and social worker Lisa Sutton during their time in Baltimore in November 2010.

Video – 24 Hours with Fostering Media Connections in D.C. – Changing the Foster Care Narrative

In late September 2010, FMC spent two days at the end of the Maryland Media market engaged in a full blown media onslaught which included an appearance on CSPAN’s The Washington Journal, The Michael Eric Dyson Show, and a press conference at the U.S. Capitol featuring congressmen, senators and former foster youth. The press conference  highlighted new data and the educational needs of foster youth.

FMC Video – Foster Care With(out) a Safety Net

The State of Maryland has extension of care to 21 while almost all of the rest of the country still ends care at 18. The Maryland Foster Youth Resource Center in Baltimore City was founded and is run by a Shalita O’Neale, who received care to 21 and was able to attend college because of it.
