Angela’s attorney told her about the nascent “Supporting Early Connections” program run by the Center for Children & Youth Justice in Seattle, which provides intensive child-parent psychotherapy. Despite weekly sessions over a long ten months, the Gobroskis saw an opportunity to put their family back together and signed up.

Our goal at FMC is to ultimately change the entire narrative of the Foster Care system: from the image of something broken to that of a system on the mend. That shift in narrative is very difficult to accomplish. The media’s understanding of foster care is limited, a decade behind what is really happening; and the inertia associated with the established narrative has deep roots.
But in three media markets we managed to start that turn.
First, thanks to Trisha Coder and Linda Watkins-Bennett of Chico’s Action News in Northern California, FMC helped craft day-of coverage surrounding crippling cuts to … Read more

Having presented our “menu” of substantive foster care story leads at venerable institutions like the Seattle Times and The Tacoma News Review among others, The Seattle PI still had not given us a chance to explain why it was so important that they devote more coverage to this rich material. So on our last day we decided to pop in for a little visit, unannounced.

Educational stability for foster youth in Washington State is one of the most advanced in the country. This is largely due to the collaboration between legislation and local organizations. From Representative Ruth Kagi, to Treehouse, to a foster family in Enumclaw, we see the positive steps Washington has taken to create educational stability by providing advocates for all foster youth.

Fostering Media Connections met up with Robyn Nance, anchor for ABC affiliate in Spokane. She was filming a show called “Wednesday’s Child” where FMC got to meet little 7 year old Dominique, who is in need of permanent housing. At the end of the day, Robyn sat down with Daniel who gave some advice on how to get involved in foster care.

As Eytan and I pulled off California’s Highway 5 and into Redding, the dark clouds that had unleashed sheets of rain on my heavily loaded Subaru wagon broke up. Out of a gash in the clouds and through still heavy rain, dazzling sunlight spilled onto the road. Behind, a full rainbow breached the wide, churning Sacramento River.
It was an auspicious start to what we think a promising trip. The stop in Redding, like the rainbow itself, was a clear reminder that we are on the right path with this whole Fostering Media Connections adventure.
A few days prior to setting off on … Read more
