a hidden foster care system …
Research suggests that children placed in foster care do better with relatives, but often those relatives have few resources and have to make significant personal sacrifices to care for their kin. FMC’s reporting has also found that some states have an informal foster care system, wherein children are placed with relatives but are not officially considered to be in foster care.
Financial support is not assured; sometimes children are dropped off in the middle of the night with no clothes, car seats or other necessities.
Programs and resources to support these families are varied across the nation. FMC created KinCare Today, a special edition print magazine, to deliver practical advice and a sense of community to relatives working hard to provide good, stable lives for their family members.
