Empowered Journalism Workshops
Our Empowered Journalism Workshop will teach those with lived experience how to use their experiences to turn their stories into publishable op-eds. Using their personal experiences to speak to different topics that impact foster youth in their communities, (foster care-to-prison pipeline, family reunification, disproportionate representation, policy influences, physical and mental health disparities, LBGQTIA+ issues, etc.) writers will learn the how to amplify their voices, use their stories to create systemic change, and empower others with similar situations.
Writers receive one-on-one training, will go through an editing process, and become published writers under the Youth Voices Rising column on The Imprint, FMC’s daily news site dedicated to rigorous, in-depth journalism focused on families and the systems that impact their lives, and Fostering Families Today, a print and online magazine that educates and inspires foster, adoptive and kinship families.
We partner with youth-serving organizations to deliver virtual and in-person workshops. Reach out to the YVR team to learn more.
